Neurodiversity Affirming Approach

As an ADHDer, diagnosed at 15 years of age but not really understanding my own diagnosis until much later in life, the neurodiversity movement has been a breath of fresh air and so positive to me and the way I get to work with children. When I studied, I was very much taught the medical model for therapy of having to “fix” and set goals to work towards someone being “normal”. The ABA therapy I witnessed some of my clients go through and some of the therapy I was taught to carry out did not sit right with me. As a result, I am a firm advocate of a neurodiversity-affirming approach acknowledging that all neurotypes (including those who are Autistic, ADHD, Apraxia, dyslexic) have unique strengths, interests, and support needs. Moreover, this approach highlights the role of the environment and societal barriers in further exacerbating challenges faced by neurodivergent individuals. I am a big believer in strengths-based approach to therapy and including your child’s interest and suporting self advocacy and education to those around them. I am still learning and undoing old, incorrect learnt methods and terminology and always striving to be better to support my clients and their needs. There is so much to learn on this topic and I strongly suggest you read from some of these amazing therapists and organizations who have lived experiences:
